Evaluation & Possible Improvements

Evaluation for final media piece

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products i.e. existing films?

Firstly, I feel as though we played our thriller title sequence 'One Last Call' pretty safe and didn't really challenge or change any conventions, we basically was inspired by other films in which we took certain key areas of scenes and made it our own. For example we were inspired by 'Se7en', which portrays a crazy man as researching and creating his masterpiece on horrifically killing 7 people. We included this style to the ending of the sequence to create a deranged villain, however we had him/ her scribbling out a photograph of the victim the audience would have seen earlier. That way it creates and enigma code of what the villain has done to her to scribble her face out as if he has completed something This is what we tried to link to so we too can have the same audience impression on the villain, that he is a smart yet is somewhat a psycho that plans his attacks carefully with patience. A second inspiration was from 'Jennifer's Body' this is a black comedy horror which includes a specific scene which is very similar to our own, we didn't actually know of this until we began researching for comparisons of other films. Basically the scene consists of a young female character like ours who is having a call and is clearly scared and in a state of shock, she hears a bang from downstairs and goes down to investigate, a lot of the shots here are quite similar to our own such as the same type of close up shot of our female characters. Thirdly, 'Anita' opens the front door to her front garden only to find nothing out there. This is a convention of thrillers because often the characters go out into a dangerous environment even though the audience can probably tell there is a killer out there.

The main typical conventions my group and I have used was things like the film being set at night, this was useful because it can really set the atmosphere and keep the audience excited and tense for any shadowy figures to jump out suddenly. We decided to use this rather than going against it as we lacked mystery, atmosphere and audience emotions, so producing the film at night has hopefully changed this.

Something that we weren't inspired to do however was the close up of the girl's phone vibrating with a text coming up saying 'Unknown Call' this sparks mystery with the audience making them want to know and want to carry on watching to find out who this mysterious caller is.

A major convention that is in a lot of other thrillers is some sort of sudden noise from another room or location. We used this rather than the girl just casually walking downstairs and opening the door because it add suspense because the audience know that something it down there, they just don't know what, adding mystery and excitement.

A major piece in our thriller which we weren't inspired from was the 'Vignette' which is not a convention, usually thrillers consists of blurriness and effects like black and white, however we used the 'Vignetter' effect which basically made the scene look as if the girl is ascending into darkness, creating much more suspense and mystery as the audience have no idea where or what she is walking into. Also in this shot something that goes against conventions is the low angle shot of the girl who in every other case is made to look weak and innocent. The reason for this is I wanted her to seem confident up the stairs on the landing where everything is light and peaceful and gradually loose her confidence and power as she slowly goes downstairs. There is also a juxtaposition in this shot of the light upstairs to the pitch black downstairs, I felt we needed this as it makes the audience feel much more tense that something will happen down there as compared to upstairs it seems very dangerous.

Non- diegetic sound was a large part of our thriller it is a typical conventional sound piece consisting of a drone that slowly, gets louder and louder throughout until she is attacked where it suddenly stops and a small piano/ keyboard piece plays when the title appears. The drone is repetitive and is only one one pedal note, it is a typical thriller convention because it creates suspense and also signifies that there will be danger soon in the following scenes. However after when the drone stops the piano piece begins to play, this is not usually what happens in other typical thrillers, usually slow paced music plays after there has been an emotional impact on the character however we used this slow paced music to show that time has passed and that the next scene is in a different location.

Last of all the characters we used was from typical conventions such as the young female victim and the hooded figure most likely to be a man. The teenage girl signifies that she is innocent, youthful and that the killer/ kidnapper is a hard emotionless character that does not care for anyone else.

2. How did you attract your audience?

With the questionnaire, feedback and potential target audience I believe that the most likely target audience is ranged from around 15- 25 year olds, this is because of the props, mise- en- scene, characters and the overall general storyline. The props and mise- en- scene has lots of feminine, 'girly' and young props, such as in the title sequences the victim who is a young girl is wearing girly pink pyjamas, in her bedroom there are lots of pink ornaments and average household props like pink television's, fluffy pink lamps and the girls bedroom wallpaper having flowers with brown and pink on them. All of this relates to a specific audience mainly because nearly all of the characters are young from around 17- 30 years old, and because the main room of filming is a teenagers girl. This would relate to my target audience who are 15- 25 year olds due to the closeness of the age meaning that some situations can be understandable for the younger generation and because there can be emotional connections with the audience and the victim because she seems very normal due to her stereotypical bedroom and seems very likeable.

I also think that this thriller would best suit young teenage females better than teenage males because there are so many conventions of female props and the colours of the mise- en- scene. There is so many props that are pink that it looks like an average teenage girls bedroom, I think that the female audience can relate to the feminine feel of the bedroom as it is what is stereotyped to be an average teenage girls bedroom with average bedroom objects.

The casts are all around the age of 17- 30, the oldest being the detective later in the film and the youngest the victim at the beginning of the thriller during the title sequence. We purposely used the victim who is the same age as the protagonist in the later scenes to be very young in comparison to the villain who is aged 23 years old, this means there is a 6 year difference between them meaning there is a massive power difference and maturity difference. This is also a reason for the target audience, the characters are a lot less mature than characters in other films that are older and more mature. The victim which is the first person the audience will see must seem believable for the audience to want to carry on watching, i believe we did this well because her room was well decorated and matches stereotypical girls rooms and that her family house she was living in was not some massive mansion but a regular working class/ middle class house making the the film have an advantage of verisimilitude, making it seem real for the audience.

A major prop was the phone in the thriller, phones are considered to be new and modern and are often related to the younger generation, for example: "he's always on that phone" "yeah, well he's a teenager what do you expect?" etc. Phones are a massive part of young peoples lives as they are much used to technology and more likely to use it more than others being as they were born into a modern world. This thriller can educate or have a small story to the target audience and that is that children and teenagers are far too obsessed with phones and communicating with others which isn't always a good things.

3. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I do believe that our film represents particular social groups, firstly, I believe that our thriller represents and focuses mainly on teenage females, this is because of the protagonist being a young girl and because of all the props like pink televisions and 'LOVE' ornaments as you can see in the bedroom of the victims bedroom who is of the same ages of the protagonist. Basically as Vladimir's theory put it, there is nearly always a typical thriller convention of a 'Damsel in distress' for other characters to try and save or rescue. Anyway the female audience can relate and connect to these young girl characters as we have tried to make them seem as normal as possible like girls in the present day.

We did not try to specify any ethnicity social groups and in fact is open to ethnicities and religious people if they wish to watch the film, there is no gore and masses of blood involved and is mainly a psychological thriller of a deranged man stalking his victims. Of course there are age restrictions (15 +) not because of the blood and gore but because there will be swearing and some violence which may inspire some to do the same. Also at times the thriller may makes those jump with sudden music and shots of attacks.

Thirdly,, the location of filming was in a house, I felt as if this was a family house for a family who were in-between working class and middle class, therefore representing these two classes and less likely higher class social groups means that people who are higher class are much less likely to watch One Last Call because it will not relate to them which can make things a lot less thrilling and suspenseful. However for the social groups that fit under working class and middle class, knowing that a thriller is aimed at you due to the same style of houses or clothes can make things seem a lot more realistic and thrilling for them.

The Villain who seems to oppose justice and the equilibrium of society is dressed in a dark hoodie that does not contradict the stereotypes of people in hoodies being violent thugs that commit crimes. Which is exactly, what this male character will be doing yet they will be much more serious crimes being committed.
Stereotypically teenagers are the ones that commit crimes, carry weapons and are always being immature however for example the film 'Shank' where a gang of youth terrorise individuals with activities like 'happy slapping'. In this thriller we are completely turning this around and making the older generation seem more violent like the villain who is deranged and seeks violence. This may be the reason why some of the younger generation wants to see the film, it may because they are fed up of their generation for always being accused and instead want to see a film which doesn't contain teenagers as violent thugs.

4. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that if we were to be backed by a British distributing and funding company it would be 'Film4', Film 4 are associated with lots of small budgeted projects and amateur projects which would be a good starting point for us as we would have an extremely low budget for completely finishing our thriller.  Having said that with 'Film4' a lot of low budget  films have had masses of revenue purely because 'Film4' are good at distributing and marketing films.
I would say that Film4 does not have a niche target audience just as it does not have a niche funding system, however on the other hand with films like 'Slumdog Millionaire' it shows that Film4 can create niche target audiences depending on the film, for example with 'Slumdog Millionaire' the niche target audience is for those with the same ethnicity as the protagonists just as it is aimed at romance lovers.

Film4 has literally funded hundreds of films with a wide and diverse selection of genres. ranging from films like 'Dark Water' to the 'Eagle', from '127 Hours' to 'A Christmas Carol'. As you can tell by the titles the genres that Film4 fund is very diverse, 'A Christmas Carol' is a film aimed specifically at families and young children which in comparison to '127 Hours' is aimed at those who like drama and not so much action.

Film4 often  back very gritty films which often have a good variation of action and storyline such as 'Trainspotting' which is a film about a man who tries to give up taking drugs, only to be plagued by visions when he is locked in his room. A lot of Film4 funded films are very realistic and can draw in the audience because of this, although we have not got a lot of conventions that we have challenged it is apparent that Film4 like to push boundaries with enticing ideas being pushed and stretched.
Therefore I have chosen Film4 because not only do we have a small budgeted film which they excel at distributing to our niche target market in the UK but also because Film4 are linked with 'Channel 4' the popular UK television channel, being as it is linked there may be chances that the film would be played allowing us to gain more revenue and views from the thriller.

I remember that we were also questioning whether 'New Line Cinemas' should fund our projects yet after some research it would be a very bad decision because 'New Line Cinemas' is a very large film company and there would be no way that this company would take on our project which has very little money spent on it, especially being as it is our first film. secondly they focus mainly on family and comedy films rather than thriller so we would have a disadvantage on views because most of their audience would not watch it as it is completely different to the films that they prefer.

5. Who would be the audience for you media product?

Well, I think looking back at our other pieces of research and target audience from my other post I feel that our primary target audience is for young teenage people, more specifically women as they are represented in a good way. Thinking of the socio economic group I personally  would say the working class and middle class only is focussed on (C1 & C2) because the environment such as the house is what they can relate too, the props and locations are all probably normal for them which should heighten the suspense for these groups. Although this does not mean that we specifically focussed on  girls because we didn't, although in the title sequence they are represented in a good way later on there would be a male detective who is trying to solve the crimes in a race against time so it is not like we have an all girl cast because we don't, the killer is also a male suggesting that men in this thriller are bad people.
However I don't think we can be at all that specific, for example a girl may love thriller with lots of gore and blood whereas someone else will prefer the crime solving and the psychological thrillers. I feel as if there is no niche ethnicity group, it was just the ethnicity of the cast we used to not specifically focussing on one group. The target audience's lifestyle I would think consists of either Secondary schools or college because a lot of teens are still in education by the time they are 15, these people would have quite active lifestyles with lots of friends, I feel as though the typical person who would watch our film would go out socialising frequently, too in comparison to the film they would be like the protagonist and victim at the start, quite popular with an obsession with Texting and calling friends.

I believe that those that would want to see our thriller will also like other films like 'Sorority Row' which is a gory thriller/ horror about a group of girls masking a death to be an accident, only to find a mysterious call from each of their mobile saying that they knew what they did, one by one they are viciously murdered by a man who has no identity in  a hood and cloak.  So other than 'Sorority Row' more psychological thrillers like 'Skeleton Key' and  'Memento'

6. What technology did you use?

Once we had filmed our thriller we needed a lot of heavy editing to get the thriller just how we wanted it to be. Without video and sound technology those who create films will have an extremely hard time to get the lighting exact, the dialogue and diegetic sounds to be of high quality and there would be no way of editing video clips by either cutting them down or adding very stylish and atmospheric effects to clips in your video.
During the time we were using video and sound software I had learnt so much over the period of editing, the group did most edits on a piece of video editing software called 'Final Cut Pro' which is available to buy on Apple Mac's. Although at times we encountered problems like  the de-colourisation of wrong objects which we needed to stay the same colour and the fact that some imported sound effects just did not work. Overall this piece of software can really change a simple plain bit  of footage into something with a lot of atmosphere. The editing and customisation is massive thanks to this colour correction tool which is basically a colour wheel, using this we were able to make the orange carpet in the end scene much duller which fitted better with the conventions of dark gritty and eerie colours.  We also used a certain effect called 'Vignette' which made the scene look surprisingly eerie as the back lighting from the landing onto the victim made her silhouette appear which masks her facial expressions creating mystery. Also with 'Vignette' the bottom of the stairs looked much darker than it was, Basically the victim was walking downstairs towards the camera which was surrounded in darkness (thanks to the Vignette effect), I feel that with this the audience will be much more excited and increases the suspense level of what is within the darkness. I made a remark that with the effect it represented her confidence and safety, i suggested that at the top where there is light it is safe and where she is confident however as she slowly progresses down the stairs she begins to lose confidence and is walking into danger.

Example of what we did using Final Cut Pro, it is the VIgnette effect, creating an eerie
atmosphere which there would not be without the effect

The above image is the colour correction tool
as you can see the customisation is massive

I also learnt just how useful cutting and cropping pieces of video clip really is, I can remember that it took our character quite a duration of time to finally turn on the light switch at the bottom of the stairs so what we managed to do was we cut the part where she reaches the bottom instead we join the piece where the victim is literally at the light switch turning it on. Without this feature it would be very boring for the audience because I already feel that our shots are too long, if we didn't cut any of them then ours would be very boring.
This part would probably have been cut when we cut out her walking
towards the light switch

The other piece of software we used was 'Soundtrack Pro' this was a life saver for us because we forgot to get our actress to scream when she was grabbed by the villain and so what we did was we opened Soundtrack Pro, searched the keywords Female Scream and it gave us a list of possible screams ,when we found one which we felt suited the character and film best we could customise/ adjust it even more by changing the sound levels like in the image below. With this software we also managed to find the click sound for when the victim turns on her lamp in her room, which just would not be picked up on the microphone on the video camera. Once we found  the clips we could then import them into Final cut pro and adjust the files to whatever location we wanted.
Able to keep a record of the file and even has the frequencies of the sound
it is possible to cut part of the sound clip to add our own customisation

Thirdly we used a piece of software called 'Logic Pro9' which basically allowed our group to play certain notes, we could also change the instrument for example into a drone which is exactly what we did, Dale being an expert on the program managed to record and import two files, one was the continuous drone and the other was the small piano piece when the title appears. This would be good to create horror music with an instrument like a violin and do an entire solo increasing the pace every time an important scene happened.

Last of all we used a fourth software called 'Motion' it is again a Mac program that works well with Final Cut Pro, I never knew that the sort of entrances and exits of text was so adjustable, we could literally out  the text anywhere and make it do what we wanted, which is much better than the simple effect like fly in effect. originally with our first title 'Thonburi' we basically added the text on and then added two effects for it to fade in and to move slightly to the right where it stopped and the next scene began. However when we changed our font we were in discussion over a different effect as the current effects seemed quite uncommon and did not go with any thriller we could think of. So, when we changed the fonts to 'I Still Know' we deleted the effect and simply made the text fade out so it looked like time has, passed in the film which we wanted because it time had passed.

7. Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I moved Media Studies classes because I changed a subject so I am not able to provide any still images of my preliminary task in action. instead I will illustrate what happened. First of all a patient got out of bed and began wandering the corridors of the hospital (Filmed at Suffolk One). A Doctor/ Nurse knocks into her as the patient is running to try and escape. The Doctor and patient exchange a few lines all of which is when they are being filmed over the shoulder keeping to the 180 degree rule when characters are talking.

I feel as though I have learnt so much since the start of the year, I barley even knew what camera angles and shots there were let alone what they are often used for and why, for example I did not know what the high angle shot was whereas now I do, it is where the camera is below the character or object and is focussed on them, this provides the character with looking strong, dominant and much more powerful than others. it is often used in action films where the  main antagonist is portrayed as being a strong and dangerous character.

Thinking back and remembering the end result of my preliminary task and sitting here now looking at my groups finished thriller title sequence, I can see we have achieved so much more through trial and error and practice, I now know how to use the best of certain effect like the 'Vignette' in our thriller which would not have looked better anywhere else other than on the stairs scene. I think that the preliminary task helped us to learn the basis of Final Cut Pro like the importing and saving of the files. It also helped us learn the basic camera shots and rules like the 180 degree rule and also to also help us learn how to cut pieces of a video file. Throughout practice since then we can now change and add fonts, such as swapping 'Thonburi' font with ''I Still Know' font and then changing the layout of the beginning titles to be in the comers of the screen.
Adding multiple effects to a video clip like when we added 'Desaturate' and 'Vignette' on the carpet to make it flow much better with the rest of the dark grim thriller. Also we adjusted sound volumes like we did when the victim hears the very first bang, before the adjustments  it was very loud, we then double clicked the image and changed the dial on the volume to decrease and 'muffle' the bang. I knew none of this above back when we were filming and editing the cuts on our preliminary task, if the thriller was to have no edits other than cuts like in the preliminary task then the thriller will be extremely boring and probably wouldn't look right as getting the right sounds, lighting effects and atmosphere is very hard without the knowledge that i know now.

The importance  of planning is very high and unfortunately for us the first idea for the thriller nothing seemed to work our properly as we didn't include enough planning, for example the first time we went to Christchurch park, we didn't assess anything we just started filming straight away, we then after about a 45 minutes of being there we  had to leave because the park shuts at the time we got there which would make it difficult for us all to get there separately and manage to film. Also the lighting was terrible, in the alleyway we thought the street lights would create a good eerie isolated alley feel to the scenes, but no anything in-between the lights was pitch black, so that was when we decided to change the idea to our final thriller now. Which again didn't finish how I wanted due to lack of planning, I felt as If we needed far more shots than we currently, did to increase the pace of editing a little rather than having very long shots like 5- 6 seconds long, we could have split it into different shots at different angles and of different things like a shot of the girl walking down the stairs in a medium shot however, the camera is 'peering' through the stair banister/ rails. But we just could not get any more filming completed in time as it was difficult to make it to Shotley and our actress was ill making more shots impossible.

To stop any problems from our preliminary task to appear on our Thriller title sequence we jotted down all the problems from the task which includes things like shots being done correctly, for example, I remember from our preliminary the patient ran past the camera and then two shots later was clearly in the exact same corridor again coming from the same way. Another problem that occurred was the pace of editing, at times the pace was a little off and sometimes there were jumps where there shouldn't be where a clip was cut too much.

I had a rough idea of thriller narratives however there was no way I could think of concepts and conventions that aided the thriller narrative. For example I knew nothing about Vladimir's character theory and nothing about the states of equilibriums like: firstly there is the 'Positive Equilibrium' then often done by the Antagonist there is a 'Disturbance of the Equilibrium', often the quest giver from Vladimir's theory would probably 'Realise the state of Equilibrium'. Fourthly, there is the 'Solving of Equilibrium and then the 'Return state of Equilibrium'.

Possible Improvements and Developments

To begin with I feel that my group and I coould have done a lot better than what we did, for example including more shots to our film to break up the long duration scenes like ones which are 6 seconds long, which is a very long times for one shots. For example use the camera through the banister idea I gave earlier or maybe a P.O.V shot of the girl walking down the stairs.A second improvement that we may have lost marks on is for a silly error of the victim not answering the phone properly, the character did not ask ‘hello, Hello?’ and ‘who is it?’ etc. Thirdly, we could have included some sort of more exciting shot like a P.O.V (Point Of View) shot or a low angle shot because I feel that there are too many still medium / long shots in our title sequence, if we added more shots which are different from one another, maybe the title sequence will be a bit more interesting and exciting for viewers to watch. Lastly, changing the font to the font used in the ‘Se7en’ opening credit would be more beneficial to have as our titles instead of a serif font which does not belong in a modern and new film which has the theme of modern technology, mobile phones. Even if we were to have a sans serif font which relates to the theme of the film would be better than what we have now at it is often portrayed as being traditional and for more official business type situations not thriller title sequences.Last of all something very small yet still noticeable is the lack of items and equipment on the table where the antagonist begins to scribble out the girls face, we could improve this scene by adding perhaps props like a dusty ageing lamp  with pens just littered on the table, this way the table wouldn't then look like its been filmed from the college table and could be passed of for being  outside of Suffolk One and in the villains study. Last of all something very small yet still noticeable is the lack of items and equipment on the table where the antagonist begins to scribble out the girls face, we could improve this scene by adding perhaps props like a dusty ageing lamp  with pens just littered on the table, this way the table wouldn't then look like its been filmed from the college table and could be passed of for being  outside of Suffolk One and in the villains study.

A major problem which could and probably has affected the groups marks overall was the planning and research, like I have stated above in the evaluation I felt that if we were to research and plan before racing ahead into filming we would not have wasted time with our initial idea and then deciding to change the entire plot. But also we may have been able to include more things like better camera shots and greater video effects which ‘flowed’ in the film because then we may have been able to go against typical conventions rather than playing it safe and sticking to common films. Researching into the target audience I felt could have gone better, firstly I think we should have asked more questions than just 4 vague questions perhaps more around 8 would be better and I believe we could have asked more specific and better questions. Rather than ‘Do you like thrillers that are kept in a compact dangerous areas i.e. House’ we could have asked ‘What types of thriller do you feel are enjoyable’ and then answers like Psychological, crime, Gangster/ hoodlums or Government conspiracies’ another question which I should have asked is ‘What film do you prefer to watch out of..’ with the answers, Leon, Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, Sorority Row or Taken. This question would allow me to gauge what sort of thrillers people prefer as the above list of thrillers are very different from one another for example Taken is very different to Silence of the lambs as Taken focuses on the male protagonist shooting and killing lot of enemies and trying to find his daughter whereas Silence of the lambs blends crime and horror with a female protagonist who is a trainee detective trying to catch the killer, so as you can see the audiences answer can be used to break down whatever film that was most popular and find any traits and characteristics such as the physiological crime and horror film Silence of the lambs. Lastly a completely stupid thing we didn’t do was categorise the public gender, this would have been extremely useful, instead of me having to analyse our film and compare it to stereotypes and conventions I could have just asked the public what gender they are because then I could analyse why and how my film backs up the fact that  my groups film focuses on the gender which we felt had picked the best answers in the questionnaire

Focusses on mainly the action
Focusses on the crime and horror

Target Audience and Questionnaire

Potential Target Audience

I believe that our potential target audience is for teenagers from 15- 25, this is because I don't think that a teenage thriller will appeal to the older generation as it is quite new and may not be what they like. The film should appeal to others around our age, especially girls as most of the character including the protagonist are girls, therefore the female audience can relate to the film. The thriller also consists of modern traits such as the titles being a sans serif fonts which are considered new and exciting, just as a mobile phones being such a large theme of our film which is still classed as new and modern. This is why  I think our sequence is aimed at the younger teenage generation specifically girls, rather than those older than 25 years old, it is because of the modern themes like the phones, teenager rooms, use of young female characters and of it being a typical teenage thriller.

Questionnaire

Here is my questionnaire I asked to ta total of 12 people. Of course if this was a much bigger scale production I would have asked much better questions with hundred of people.

Feedback

In class now that every group has finished editing we all managed to watch each others group film sequence, everyone was asked questions about other groups film. When ours came on the class had some feedback positive and negative to give back to us. The first serious point that was given to us was the pace of the thriller and the lack of excitement when watching the thriller. Apparently the class and ourselves had a suggestion for improvement which was shoot a couple more scenes like of the villain walking closer and closer to the door and using perhaps film a shot through the banister rails to make it look like the girl is imprisonment, apparently this would add a bit more atmosphere to the thriller. A second point to focus on was not all the texts at the start were not all the same colour, some were white and others were black. However some positive feedback was the like of the vignette effect on the stairs and the sudden cut and scream as soon as the villain grabs her by surprise.

Inspirations and Comparisons

The inspirations  we used from other films of the same nature, was 'Se7en', we was inspired by the opening credits of the thriller piece which was the diary scene where there are multiple close up's of the diary and its content, it appears to be research on the murderers victims, this suggests that the antagonist is smart, patient and therefore much more dangerous which is what we wanted to portray for our antagonist character. To make it our own we used a photograph of the victim from earlier and got the actor to scribble out the young girls face with a pen as if he has just  completed something that the audience do not know about. i also wanted the font to be much like the one in 'Se7en' too however it is just didn't fit with our modern, new and mobile phone theme so we didn't use the font in the end, although I still thought we should have, especially if we could  manage to get it to go blurry and then jitter in and out of position.

There are quite a  few comparisons that the group recently found, these two films were called 'Jennifer's  Body' and 'Sorority Row'. Firstly, in 'Jennifer's Body' which is a black comedy horror, there are some scenes and shot which are very similar, for example the stairs scene where both girls have heard a noise from downstairs and slowly they  both begin to walk downstairs. the similarity between them is the massive difference between the light and darkness at the top and bottom of the stairs, this creates suspense, mystery and  portrays to the audience there is danger too come.
The second comparison between our thriller and Jennifer's body is that both open the front door to a false build up, both cannot see outside until they have opened the door because our front door was frosted and the other films front door was made or wood with no eye hole to see through.

The second film is called 'Sorority Row' which is a gory thriller, this films is literally just like ours as well, as i it has the same sort or theme as our does with a unknown caller leaving mysterious calls to the girls.

Here is a shot from 'Jennifer's Body' you can see the similarities with the lighting effects and the facial expression of them both, the lighting is very good on both scenes because half of her face is in darkness the other not keeping the theme of mystery from the caller. To get the same light effect we used a lamp which gave key lighting as it was the  only one on in the room at the times, creating shadows across our victim's face.
other than the storyline and themes there are no other real comparisons between the two except maybe that Jennifer's Body uses a similar camera angle as we don to film 'Anita' panicking on the phone.( medium close up)

Font Styles

After a lot of research and testing with other fonts like 'Thonburi', after a while we found a website which consisted of many horror and thriller fonts, the website was called 'Dafont'. We had a little bit of a problem with defining which was thriller and which was more horror fonts, in the end we tried to go with other conventions of thrillers and picked the font named 'I Still Know'. We agreed with this font as it looked like a good thriller and fitted with conventions of other thrillers like 'Sorority Row', where it is a modern thriller film yet they have used serif traditional fonts like the image below

The other fonts which include names and job descriptions like 'Executive Producer Dale Russell' we originally put as 'Thonburi' to match the original title that we used just to keep the consistency of the serif thriller font. However from the class feedback we felt as if it was pretty bad, it looked like simple amateur and honestly looking back the font looks pretty naff and does not match with the theme. Instead we went for a much more bolder font which is visible but doesn't draw the audience's attention from the titles. Secondly, it stays in consistence with the title of the thriller 'One LAst Call'
Here is the image below of the same shot with the new font

Editing Friday 23rd March 2012

Today we managed to get nearly all our editing completed, we have now fully cropped and cut out any pieces of video clip we do not need, and we managed to add some effects and transitions. the first effect was something called 'Vignette' on the 'Final Cut Pro' software, this creates a much darker effect to the edges and almost looks as if you are peering through a key hole, i think it works well when the girl is coming down the stairs as she is constantly getting closer and closer to the camera and with the effect the colour change makes everything look much more 'gritty' and in a way more dangerous.

We also added a few transitions to the opening thriller sequence, we added a sudden cut and a fade in, the fade in was used to show the audience that time has passed and that the scene is in a different location now. the sudden cut however we used as it is much more dramatic and thrilling, this is also the part where she just got grabbed, so the sudden cut makes the audience ask the question 'Where has she gone and what happened to her?'.

Thirdly, we added a colour scheme effect to the end scene because when the camera follows the feet of the kidnapper/ murderer the carpet is shown as well, it is an orange colour and we felt as if it ruined the immersion as it just doesn't belong, so we used the effect 'Colour Scheme' and managed to make the scene look much more dull and grimy than what it originally was.

Shows that we have added two effects to this
clip, Desaturate which basically makes colours much darker and
Vignette which adds a circle of darkness around the outer edges of the screen.
Now the scene should fit with other thriller films rather than having a bright orange carpet because orange signifies
Harmony and intelligence which we do not want being portrayed.

We also 'Desaturated' the victim's bedroom because although we wanted codes and conventions of a typical girls room, the pink was actually extremely vibrant and powerful also typical thriller conventions did not match the bright pink colours.

Last of all using and electronic keyboard and 'Logic Pro9' our group managed to import a piece of
droning noise that we fitted nicely after the bang from downstairs. Drones are often used to convey to the audience that something important is about to happen, it also is used when the pace of editing begins to get faster just before a important scene. For example, a action film just before the protagonists is captured a the enemy a drone may fade in showing the importance of a scene  We added to other things using this 'Logic Pro9' software the first was a female scream which we had to edit in, mainly because we just couldn't get the right quality from our actresses scream during the scene outside. And last of all we added a very  faint heart beat that you can hear if you are listening closely, the heart beat was used to excite the audience because when there is music or sound that is faster than our heart is means that we are more likley to get excited and thrilled over it, ready for the important scene.

Prop List and Storyboard

Prop name
Uses and reason for use
Pink girl pyjamas
Shows average girl on an average day, very girly and pink making the victim look more innocent and young.
Hoodie
Hides villains identity, stereotype of people in hoodies being bad makes it seem more real.
Pink Lamp
Goes with theme of victim being very feminine and innocent.
Bed
Used as a piece of furniture for somewhere for the girl to lay down and sleep
Pink Television
Fits with rest of ‘young girly’ theme and also is used to pass time for the girl.
Other objects and ornaments
All of which convey the girls innocence and feminine side as well as making her look like a normal teenager.
Light switch
Provides light and comfort for the girl before she opens the door
‘Frosted’ front doors and windows
Masks the villain hiding in the shadows.
Photograph and pen
Used to show that the girl they saw earlier is now gone and in the villains hands, dead or alive.

Here is the prop list which I just made, it includes everything that was visible in the video clips of the thriller including lamps, front doors and the photograph at the end.The main reason for adding these props was to make the house seem like an average family house, the girl we felt had to be shown as a young dependant girl that is very feminine and likes what average teenage girls like.

Here is the groups storyboard, drawn by Steve, storyboards are useful because it is a type of planning and assessing whether any more shots are needed as well as adjusting any time durations. These storyboards also allow us to make any changes if we see appropriate to do before even beginning filming. Which would save a lot of time not doubling back on yourself.Lastly, storyboards are a great way of getting feedback from people before even producing the thriller and I think that I may ask a few other groups in our Media lessons what they think of  our storyline to see if there are any developments i could add in or edit.
